A Classy Display by a Political Party

I'm an independent by nature.

Even if I wasn't in news, I don't think I would be a part of a political party.  Democrats probably represent me better socially and for the environment.  Republicans probably better represent me in the budget and defense.  So I don't know which party I would belong to anyway.

That being said, I have to give some kudos to Marathon County Democrats.

My assignment on election night was to report from their local victory party.  There were the balloons and posters and buttons and a buffet line and all the stuff you see at election victory parties.

And on this night for the D's, there was joy of the party taking back the White House and the realization that a race barrier is about to be broken.

But the thing that sticks with me is the party members reaction to the concession speech from John McCain.  They stood in the Labor Temple and watched closely and respectfully.  Even applauding a couple of times.  I don't think two thirds of the people there knew there were cameras in the back of the room, so I don't think this was a show for the media.  I think it was genuine.  An honest show of respect for a man who deserves it for a lifetime of service to our country in the military and as a member of the Congress.

And it earned respect from me for members of the Marathon County Democratic Party.

That was pretty darn classy.
