Are They Really Heroes?

Hi bloggers...

Check this out...

I would like to know the criteria used to recognize and honor "our local heroes".  According to our College Edition of the American Heritage Dictionary, a hero is "a man noted for the feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his life. A war hero".  I don't see where a person becomes a hero by merely joining our armed forces or by just going through basis training and not even being in a risk area!  I am a Korean War Army Veteran, a member of the American Legion, and of Veterans of Foreign Wars.  I do not consider myself a hero although I do know several who are and have been decorated for bravery.  I would be interested in obtaining your comments and rational for your Local Hero designation.

I received this e-mail a few days ago and thought you'd like to join in the discussion.

Is this person right?

Or, as I responded, could someone be considered a hero for giving up years of his or her life to serve our country at a time when they don't have to?

What do you think?

J
