PACKERS
OK, so now we can all get off the ledge. Aaron Rodgers came in and played very well. Good decision making, a good strong arm and no interceptions. It's a good start.
Two things did worry me about the game Monday night. The number of penalties, which will hopefully get cut down as the season goes on, and the play calling to start the 4th quarter. I thought they went a little too far down the "run-run-pass-punt" road and away from what had worked earlier in the game after they had established a nice lead. But, I guess I'm not the coach. And with his track record so far, I'm not about to start second guessing Mike McCarthy.
Oh, and as for my neighbor, the Vikings fan who yelled "YOUR GUYS ARE GOING DOWN" as I headed to work Monday morning. Where were you Tuesday morning?
BADGERS
I had the chance to go to both Badgers games to start the season. The first game went as expected. The second, with Wisconsin spotting Marshall a 14-point lead, gave us a reason to worry. But hopefully, that was just a hiccup before the real team came out and crushed the Thundering Herd. We'll see this weekend when they head to Fresno, CA to play Fresno State. It will be a tough test against a good team before the Big 10 season starts.
BREWERS
Now, on to the Brewers. It sure looks like a nasty September swoon is here. Lately, this team has been finding ways to lose. Fielder is almost difficult to watch, he's slumping so badly right now. Hart has not been nearly as good in the second half of the season. Hall looks plain silly many times at the plate. And the pitchers out of the bullpen... Well, let's just say I've heard a friend refer to them as a "band of butchers."
It doesn't matter how many CC Sabathias your bring in. You've also got to be able to hit and keep a lead. In 2008, the Brewers can't haul out the "we are young and we're learning from it" excuse that we heard at the end of last year.
If they crumble again this year, someone needs to be held accountable. My votes would be Bob Melvin and Ned Yost.
What do you think?
