The latest installment of "Star Trek" opened this weekend, and the early indications are that it's going to be every bit as huge as the advertising wants us to believe it will be. Part of what's fueling this is that females, who aren't usually a big part of the core "Star Trek" fan base, are calling Chris Pine, the actor who plays young James Kirk, "even hotter than Robert Pattinson." Who would have thought that "Star Trek" and "Twilight" would pull the same people into the theaters?
Early reviews are very good, but to be a true blockbuster, they will need people to go see it more than once. And to do that, they'll need to satisfy the legions of hard-core Trekkies and Trekkers, who will pore over every detail with a fine-toothed comb, looking for errors. And I wonder how long it will be before parodies start showing up on YouTube? In 2009, that may be a truer indication of success than anything else!
Matt Damon was interested in the role of Kirk, but was told he was too old! Director J. J. Abrams (creator of "Lost", "Alias", "Fringe" and "Felicity") has included some interesting cameos in the movie - the late Professor Randy Pausch ("The Last Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams") makes an appearance, as does Chris Doohan, son of the original Scotty, James Doohan. Tyler Perry also appears, in his first role outside one of his own projects.
Have you seen it yet? Does it live up to the hype? Did you see it in IMAX? And most importantly, did actor Zachary Quinto, who plays the young Spock, properly perform the Vulcan hand salute?
