Ron Santo

I know this is a few days late, but by now you've heard about the passing of Ron Santo, the legendary Cubs third baseman and later radio broadcaster.

If you've never heard Santo on the radio, you missed out.  Talk about a fan with a microphone.  For better or worse, he lived for Cubs baseball.  His son did a documentary on him a few years back that is excellent..."This Old Cub."

And every year he was filled with disappointment not just with the Cubs, but because he was denied access into the Hall of Fame.

I always thought a hall of famer was someone who dominated his position for a long period of time, from 61-70 Santo was that guy. 1653 hits, .281 average, 270 HR, 1007 RBI, 5 gold gloves, 6 all-stars, four top-10 MVP & twice top-5 MVP voting. Again that was a 10-year span not including his rookie season and last 4 years that included another 3 all-star games, all while playing with Type 1 diabetes and NO ONE knowing about it until 1971.

Until next time...
