Attention WIAA:
Your idea for a Super Tuesday super-sectional final for basketball was, and is, a bad idea. Just ask De Pere's, Nicolet's, Eau Claire North's and Appleton East's girls basketball teams. Their Super Tuesday games have been postponed twice now and will be played on Thursday, maybe, and will turn around to play in the state tournament in Madison on Friday. What a nightmare for all involved.
A few coaches from our area that we've spoken with are not in favor of the Super Tuesday idea. If a team is lucky enough to get out of the sectional final on a Saturday, they have to turn around and play on Tuesday, just to earn a trip to Madison. That's not a lot of time for the kids to enjoy what they've accomplished. Whereas, Divisions 2-5 clinch on Saturday, and have a couple days to enjoy then a few days to prepare for their opponents. And then there's the fans and parents. You're asking them to commit to an additional school night to travel, or take time off work, to travel to a neutral location. C'mon.
This could all be avoided if D1 was on the same schedule for regionals as everyone else. D2-D5 play regionals on a Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. D1 plays Tuesday and Saturday. Why is there extra time off for the D1 folks??? If you keep them all on the same sked, everyone plays their sectional final on a Saturday, there's no need for a Super Tuesday, and we can keep the 5 divisions format.
Speaking of 5 divisions, I like it. It gives more teams a chance to experience the big stage in Madison because you're keeping schools closer to other schools within their enrollment. WINNING! Would Merrill's boys have ever made it to Madison in D1? No. Would Marathon have won state in D3? Possibly. But because they were in divisions 2 & 4, respectively, they created memories for a lifetime. You got it right.
Until next time...
