It's December and I'm Thinking Brewers!?!

Posted: Mon 11:46 PM, Dec 20, 2010

Just as the title of this blog says, it's December and I'm already excited about the Brewers' 2011 season.

In a matter of 3 weeks, the Brewers have gone from a sub-.500 team to the look of a divisional winner.  I know there's a long way to make that happen, but the off-season is always played on paper, right?  That being said, the Crew look like a winter contender.

I love love love the moves they've made for Shawn Marcum and Zach Greinke.

With a rotation of Yovani Gallado, Greinke, Marcum, Randy Wolf and a 5th starter (Chris Narveson, Chris Capuano, etc) and an offense that can average 5 runs per game, they should contend.

For Marcum they had to give up #1 minor league prospect Brett Lawrie.  For Greinke and SS Yuniesky Betancourt, they gave up starting shortstop Alcides Escobar, starting centerfielder Lorenzo Cain, possible future closer Jeremy Jeffress and pitching prospect Jake Odorizzi.  That's a lot of potential, right?  Exactly, potential.  Thing is, those guys could flame out and never reach their full potential.  If the opposite happens, the Brewers will only wonder what if...unless they make the postseason.

No one's really harping on the fact they lost Matt LaPorta these days in exchange for CC Sabathia.  No, because we remember how fun that run was.

You've got Marcum and Greinke locked up for 2 years, and Prince for one more before he's gone.  Could he possibly stick around if the team has success with their new rotation?  Could the Brewers be showing a commitment to winning for Prince's sake?  Or are they all in before they lose their big slugger?  Or did the sour taste of the rotation the last 2 years still bother Doug Melvin that he wants to wash it away?

Whatever the reason, I'm jacked for the Brewers' season to get started.  The Brewers open their season March 31 at Cincy.  The home opener is April 4.

Until next time...
