Let me start by saying I've met Badgers football coach Bret Bielema on several occasions, talked to him on and off-camera and have always liked him. Even striking up a conversation about where he grew up because I use to cover the Erie-Prophetstown co-op team in Illinois during my time in the Quad Cities.
As you probably know by now, the rivalry between Wisconsin and Minnesota was intensified on Saturday.
After scoring a touchdown and taking a 25 point lead late in the 4th quarter, Bielema goes for 2. 2-point conversion when up by 25 and the game well in-hand?
That my friends is running up the score.
His reasoning is because his "coaches card" for extra points/2-point conversions said so? Call it what you will, dress it up any way you'd like to, but that's running up the score and a classless act on Bielema's part. Whether there's bad blood there or not, you just can't do that. It WILL come back to haunt you.
Gophers safety Kyle Theret tried to downplay it from their perspective: "When they've got a big lead, there's no need for it. But the only thing you can do to stop it is not let them get into the end zone. If you don't like what they do after a touchdown, don't let them get a touchdown. When they've got a big lead, there's no need for it. But the only thing you can do to stop it is not let them get into the end zone. If you don't like what they do after a touchdown, don't let them get a touchdown."
Well said by a young man who gets it. Are you listening coach B?
Until next time...
