"The Boss" Changed Baseball

The sporting world said goodbye to Yankees owner George Steinbrenner on Tuesday, dying after a heart attack.  But the man they referred to as "The Boss" not only left his impression in New York, but all across baseball.

Steinbrenner made "Catfish" Hunter the highest paid pitcher in baseball in 1975, foreshadowing what was to follow with his free agent spending.  His consatant pursuit of a World Series put the pressure on other teams to try and keep up, as best as they could, anyway.

In 2002, He found more ways to create revenue for his team by creating his own network.  He spent a lot of money to win, but made more than he spent, and because of his spending did put money in the pockets of other teams because of the luxury tax.

The list goes on, but those are the biggest examples.

He changed the way baseball was managed, for better or worse.

Until next time...
