Brewers Closer, Trade Prince, Macha's Status?

Well, it looks as though the end is near for Trevor Hoffman.  The future hall of famer blew his 5th save of the season on Wednesday (5/18), giving up 3 runs without recording an out.  Question is...who closes for the Crew?  Todd Coffey and LaTroy Hawkins have the most experience of the guys on the pen.  Hawkins is on the disabled list and has been struggling.  Coffey has bene struggling as well, with opponents hitting .299 against him and a 5.00 ERA.  Your next, and probably best, option is Carlos Villanueva.  He's been the most consistent out of the pen, with a 3.05 ERA and opponents hitting .182 against him, plus he's K'ed 27 in 20 innings.  My guess, skipper Ken Macha will say they'll bring in someone based on matchups.  Yeah, because that always works out well.  Tell the pitcher he's your closer and he won't have to play a guessing game every night.

The hole they're digging themselves is getting worse.  I know it's mid-May.  But this team has shown no sign of playing good baseball for an extended period of time, much less for another 4-1/2 months.  Which leaves the question...when do you start shopping Prince Fielder.  Ryan Howard just got a new contract worth $25-million per year.  And you don't think Prince will be looking for 20?  I'd be surprised if Prince isn't on the trading block by the All-Star break.  The Brewers don't have much pitching coming up thru the ranks and need to re-stock.

And what about Ken Macha?  Fire him?  Keep him?  It's certainly not Macha's fault the team is playing this bad.  You can blame him for sticking with Hoffman too long.  But as far as the rest of the pitching rotation...he was put in a position to fail.  Sure, a healthy Yovani and the signing of Randy Wolf upgraded the staff, but it was still a suspect staff to begin with.

Until next time...
