Trevor Time Over?

It's been a trying April for all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman.

Has he lost it?  Or just going through a really bad stretch?

He's already blown 4 saves this season, 3-for-7.  He blew 4 all of last season.  Going back to the 2000 season, his blown save numbers have looked like this: 7(00), 3(01), 3(02), didn't play in 03, 4(04), 3(05), 5(06), 7(07), 4(08), 4(09).

It's such a mental game, being a top-flight closer.  And right, he just doesn't look comfortable out there.  If/when he starts getting ahead of batters, he can use the changeup, paint the corners and get some beneficial calls.

But how long does Macha wait?  In fact, what are the other options?  LaTroy Hawkins has closed before, but the 2 seasons he was full-time closer, he blew 9 saves in 2001 and 2004.  He saved 11-15 for the Astros last season.

So the best option is to give Hoffman a few days off.  He's been around this long because he knows how to take care of himself.  Let's just hope it happens sooner than later.

Until next time...
