Selig to be Bronzed Outside Miller Park

Posted: Wed 3:51 PM, Feb 10, 2010

The Brewers announced on Monday that former owner, and current commissioner, Bud Selig will be bronzed.  A statue of Selig will be unveiled in August outside Miller Park.  The only other statues outside the ballpark are Hank Aaron and Robin Yount.

For some reason, Selig and the Brewers are catching some flack for this.  I'll admit, my first thought when I got the email from the Brewers was...shouldn't they do it after his commissioner days are done?  It opens both sides up to the jokes that others will make.

But then I thought, why is it such a bad idea.  It's the BREWERS who are immortalizing the man, not MLB.  It was Selig who bought the Seattle Pilots and moved them to Milwaukee.  It was Selig who played a major role in the Brewers getting Miller Park.  What he's done for baseball in Milwaukee should be remembered.

Yes, the steroids-era happened on his commissioner clock, the All-Star game fiasco, and even the ridiclous idea to have the AS Game decide homefield advantage in the World Series.  But that has nothing to do with his legacy in Milwaukee.  And trust me, the Brewers didn't just decide to do this without Selig's permision.  I have no doubt that he was consulted beforehand, and the two sides agreed to proceed.

Until next time...
