Let me TRY and explain CBS' Football Procedures
After several, and I mean several complaint calls, and some of the "mean" variety, let me try and explain CBS' football procedures as best I can.
Each Sunday, only one network (CBS or FOX) is granted doubleheader rights. You will never see CBS and FOX with a doubleheader on the same Sunday, it's just the way the contracts are signed with the networks.
Now, as for how that affects our market. On CBS doubleheader days (11/8, 11/22, 12/13, 12/27, 1/3 are the remaining dates) we will show two football games. We tend to request a game that appeals to our market or one that could be the better game. We're not told what games we're assigned until 11-12 days before that Sunday.
This past Sunday (10/25) was a FOX doubleheader day. We could have had EITHER a noon game OR a 3:00 game, but not both. We were assigned the Jets-Raiders game at 3:05. Therefore, you saw on NewsChannel 7 the CBS pregame show from 11-noon. Then we went to syndicated programming...Extra, etc. We're not ALLOWED to show the noon game on CBS because we have the 3:00 game. But once the early game ended, football returned to our airwaves for the 3:00 Jets-Raiders kickoff. Had we been assigned the noon kickoff, the same thing would have happened. Football at noon...once that game ends, it goes to syndication. But we just happened to have the 3:00 game, so when the CBS pregame show ended at noon, we were not allowed to show football and many thought we just abandoned football. Not the case.
