As Toby Keith sings, "the fit hit the shan" in Milwaukee. The Brewers made some moves today (Wednesday). 6 weeks too late.
J.J. Hardy is sent to Nashville, prized prospect Alcides Escobar is called up. If Escobar can prove over the last 50 games or so he can play, Hardy will be traded in the offseason. Hopefully for some pitching.
They have to eat the remaining 10-million of Bill Hall's contract. His 4-year $24-million deal signed signed after 2006, when he hit a career high 35 HR's, has NOT paid off. He has 35 HR's total in '07, '08 and '09. Someone will pick him up and only have to pay him the pro-rated portion of the veteran minimum, while the Brewers still pay him for the rest of this year and all of next with a $500,000 for 2011. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy though. In my time in the Brewers' clubhouse, Hall has always talked, even after the rest of the media were gone.
Bill Castro falls victim to a shabby pitching staff, which we all knew would be terrible during spring training. The fact they pitched well and held together from April-June is remarkable if you look at it. The Brewers were 2-games up on the Cardinals in the NL Central on July 1 for 1st place. Now look at them. 17-years as bullpen coach, less than a year as pitching coach and nearly 18-years of service with the Crew is washed away.
Changes should have been made at the All-Star break, trades included if they were serious about contending. Since the break, they're 10-15, and have fallen from 2.5 games back to 7.5. But hindsight is 20-20 right?
Is Ken Macha the next to go at season's end?
