Dumb Decisions By Sports Management

Posted: Mon 4:22 PM, Feb 16, 2009
Former Pointer standout Terry Porter was fired by the Phoenix Suns on Monday.   At the time, the Suns are 28-23, 9th place in the Western Conference.  Have they underachieved?  Yes.  But they brought Porter in to help toughen up their defensive approach...Pistons style, since he was an assistant in Detroit beforehand.  Problem is, Phoenix, or pretty much most teams in the Western Conference not named San Antonio, is not a defensive team.  They don't have the personnel.  Amare Stoudamire doesn't do it.  Shaq's a mere shadow of his former defensive self.  Steve Nash, Jason Richardson, Leandro Barbosa?  Not so much.  So instead, the Suns decide to fire Porter and go with his assistant and go back to the run-and-gun.  Aside from 50+ wins teh last 4 years, where has that gotten them?

The Spurs have proven defense can win out West.  The Suns could have made some changes in the off-season to cater to Porter's style, rather than him cater his style to the roster.  But that's not today's pro sports.  Porter isn't thr first such casualty, and he certainly won't be the last.

So what if the Packers fail miserably on defense this year under 1st year d-coordinator Dom Capers?  Do they fire him and bring someone else in?  Clearly the Packers don't have a defensive roster built for a 3-4 defense.

Your thouhgts?

Until next time...
