I'm not sure about you, folks, but I was stunned by the revelations of Alex Rodriguez testing positive for two steroids back in 2003. I know I shouldn't be considering the era we went through, but this was the anti-Bonds. At least we were led to believe that.
Where does Rodriguez go from here? The big difference between him and Barry Bonds, is Rodriguez cares deeply how he is perceived by the fans and the public...Bonds didn't. Does he come clean? Does he deny? Does he use the Andy Pettitte route and say he only tried it once? Does he stay quiet? I've gotta tell you, I'm intrigued by this, moreso than the whole Bonds thing.
There were 104 who tested positive in 2003, Rodriguez is #1. What do you think the other 103 players feel, because as the story goes, those who tested positive KNOW, though they weren't suppose to be told. So those 103 have to be freaking out right about now. My guess is, there's some more big names in there, too.
To think, if the Players Union had just destroyed the tests like they were supposed to, this would never be out. MLB had an agreement that if 5% or higher tested positive, full-out drug testing would be implemented in 2004. But the top officials of the Players Union were trying to finagle their way below the 5% threshold and didn't destroy them right away. They were seized as part of the BALCO investigation, and here we are today. You can read the report here.
And the NFL could be in for a big hit as well. Former player Dana Stubblefield (also involved with BALCO) named names as a cooperation for an easier sentence last week.
Until next time...
