By now you've heard the story about the girls basketball game between Covenant and Dallas Academy in which Covenant won the game by a 100-0 score. If you haven't, you can get a quick reference here.
Now the coach of Covenant has been fired for not apologizing for the lopsided win and not agreeing with the school's decision to seek a forfeit of the win. Check this story our right here.
66-13, 86-17, 85-18, 97-25, 76-16. Those are some scores from our area this season. I know it's not 100-0, but all are lopsided, wouldn't you agree?
I've seen some ugly games of basketball, baseball, football, etc. in my 11-years in the business. But never have I seen the attention this story is getting. I understand the disgust some people may feel about the coach running up the score, but as Steve Spurrier once said when he was the coach at Florida, then the other team should stop playing defense.
Here's what I have a problem with: Covenant school officials are punishing their own girls for playing hard and doing what they were coached to do, calling the victory shameful and not Christ-like. Really? Covenant officials say Dallas Academy should be praised for continuing to play hard and not just giving in when they easily could have, and rightfully so. But at the expense of your own reputation, both the school's and the girl's?
Without seeing the game, one can only go off of the stories reported. And they say Covenant was still pressing and launching 3's even after they were ahead 59-0 at the half. Should they have eased up, maybe. But think back to when you were a kid...if you got the chance to get on the floor and play would you have just gone half-speed. Probably not.
Until next time...
