Okay... maybe I'm just complaining to complain here, but I guess I don't understand why there have been so many "Remakes/Reboots" lately??!??
I think the straw that broke the camel's proverbial back (for me!) was the Trailer for the "new" movie True Grit. I don't know how many of today's "younger" generation... (and maybe even mine in our 30's for that matter).... know that this was an EXCELLENT movie done in 1969 with John Wayne. Sure, he's one of my favorite actors of all time and I have an "uncanny" knack of trying to talk like him from time to time, but there were also several other good actors in that movie that went on to good things as well, such as: Robert Duvall, Glen Campbell and Dennis Hopper.
Now we come to the year 2010 and the Coen brothers decide that they need to remake a Western that was done about 40 years ago. I guess I get some remakes from time to time due to advances in technology.... such as King Kong .... but a WESTERN? Are you kidding me? What kind of technology has changed in 40's years when shooting a Western? Hmmm, if I had to bet, I would bet there will be some CG animations in this new movie, which will even upset me further....
Now, on to reboots and rebooting of franchises. One of the more recently announced reboots was from Sony in regards to the Spiderman franchise... after 3 very successful movies, Sony announced this year they are now going a new direction with the movie series and are replacing all (at least most) of the original trilogy actors.... including the main star, Tobey Maguire. I am not quite sure why they did this, since all 3 movies made just almost $2.5 billion worldwide. The total cost to make and advertise all 3 movies was under $600 million. Sony almost made a 5 to 1 ration on dollar earned compared to dollar spent, and they're still going a different direction.
I will be asking Mr. Jeff Thelen to weigh in on my blog, such as how would he feel if one of his best tv series he ever watched "Golden Girls" was remade with all new actors/actresses?
How about you? What do you think of Remakes/Reboots? Fans, yes or no? Am I just being a complete whiner here? Or does someone else feel this way as well?
Thanks.
