Snow Covers a majority of the country ... and a Mississippi TV Station feels the wrath from Mother Nature

Updated: Wed 10:34 PM, Jan 12, 2011

As of 1/11/11 at 7am, approximately 70% of the country had snow on the ground, with all states (except Florida) with snow on the ground.

The past week has been rather interesting for snow cover, with the "Deep South" receiving snow and the Northeastern part of the country, getting shalacked with another almost 2' of snow as of today.

Here's the current snow cover map for the lower 48 states:

Now, as mentioned, the Deep South had some snow and ice. Have a look at this video from Jackson, Mississippi. The tv station in this video sits near the base of the television tower, so that when ice starts to fall from the tower and guy-wires, it becomes a very dangerous event.

While this station (WSAW) doesn't have a problem like that (because our tower is on Rib Mountain), I did work at a station in Rockford, IL (WREX) where there were ice and issues with it falling onto the station's roof and parking lot. Let me tell you, hearing big pieces of ice hit the roof, was both frightening... and deafening!
