As I have blogged/mentioned before, radars and satellites are really good and very useful instruments that meteorologists (and others) use on a daily basis.
Visible satellite images are usually very helpful for detecting cloud movement/trends as storm systems roll through.
Have a look at the first set of looping images below.........
Did you notice a "deck" of clouds that never move?
Now.... have another look at the same loop.. but this time, notice the area hilighted by the blue line. Watch as this loops through today's (Thursday October 28, 2010) weather.
Now, can you see the snow pack across the Dakotas? Satellites (visible) can detect fresh snowpack rather easily, especially when there are no clouds around, and also while the sun angle is still pretty high in the sky compared to Mid January.
