It's too Dry!

Even with some decent amounts of rainfall this week, we're still running quite a bit below normal for the year 2010. Most areas are about 4" to 5" behind for the first 5 months of May, which is something I was hoping we could avoid for yet another growing season. While it is still very early in June, the lack of rainfall is starting to get at a critical stage for parts of Wisconsin.

Without even looking at the numbers in the chart, you can see that most of our area is considered to be drier than normal, with the extremely dry areas once again affecting the Northwoods.

Here's a look at roughly the % in area that Wisconsin has been dry over the past 6 months.

Notice that we started the new year with about 58% of the state having normal conditions and that there was just 7% considered to be in the D2-D4 range on the Drought Monitor.  Notice that in the past week, that number is 29% and there's 11% (mostly in the Northwoods) of Wisconsin that is in the extreme D3 category.

The bottom line is, while it's always nice to have it be sunny and perfect on the weekends in Wisconsin over the summer... we really do need the rainfall.  Maybe we can hope for rain to happen after 11pm every night so that by the morning, everything smells fresh after the rain?  Here's hoping for more rainfall!
