The newest and latest weather satellite to go up into outer space happened at the beginning of March of this year. The first images are now available from this satellite that was launched March 4, 2010.  This satellite will continue to monitor and detect the different weather conditions across this country as the other GOES satellites have done in the past.

Now that GOES-P has finally been moved into its orbit and is now sending images back, it has now been renamed GOES 15. NASA will hand operational control over to NOAA sometime later in the year.

It is thought that with the newer imager and sounder on board, it's increase in resolution may be able to help forecast things in a bit more timely fashion. When I type "things", I'm pretty much referring to severe weather.

This satellite will be 22,300 miles above the surface of the Earth... so just a bit out of my reach. GOES-R is up next for launch, and the last I heard, that may still happen in the next few years.

Random usless trivia tidbit of the day... weather satellites do not have "cameras" on board, but rather, use something called an imager to detect cloud cover.
