Veterans Day 2009

Please don't forget that today (Wednesday) is Veterans Day (Remembrance Day/Armistice Day) November 11.  While this day is an annual holiday to honor our military veterans, I would like to encourage y'all to honor their service to this country every day.   The actual day to remember our military veterans (November 11), comes from when Germany signed the actual armistice to end the fighting of World War I on the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.  The actual treaty, the Treaty of Versailles, officially ending World War I was signed June 28, 1919.

The original name of the day was ArmisticeDay and became a holiday in the United States in 1926 and then it became a national holiday in 1938.   It wasn't until 1954, that the official holiday name became what it is now known as today... Veterans Day.

There was a short period of time where new legislation changed Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October.  It remained like that from 1968 to 1978, until Congress returned the observance of Veterans Day back to November 11.

Regardless of your opinion on wars, past and present, our veterans deserve our respect, admiration and thanks for the job that they do and have done in the past.  My brother served in the Navy for several years, and I thank him for his service to our country.

By the way, while there are many spellings of Veterans Day (Veteran's Day and Veterans' Day), most government agencies agree that Veterans Day is without an apostrophe because the Veterans do not own the day, it is a day attributed to them and their honor and service.
