I have to admit, as a techy type person, I'm a bit worred about the Conficker Worm that is set to go active within a few hours.... I even had all the station's computers download the latest virus definitions in advance of what may be a terrible situation around midnight! Even more worrisome, no one seems to know what this Virus/Worm is capable of! Yikes!
Note, this virus/work ONLY affects Microsoft Windows Operating systems... if you have an Apple/Mac or use Linux, you are fine.
There are plenty of things you can do----
1) download your latest virus definitions tables! Don't have a virus scanner program? Try AVG Free, YUP,,, FREE! free.avg.com/ . You will need to do all the updates, but you can't argue with free. Other virus scanners will download updates for you automatically, such as McAfee or Symantec...
2) When is the last time you updated your windows operating system? Super easy to do... open Internet Explorer... then choose the Tools tab at the top and then Windows Update. You should download all the latest updates, as the update to protect you from this virus originally came down in October 2008, but there have been a few updates since then to make sure all goes without a problem.
3) Try a couple of websites to make sure you are okay. First, here's Microsoft's version of scanning your computer online: onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm (please note, it is in beta testing with Windows Vista OS... it did not work when I tried with my Vista machine)
You can also go to www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp
www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp
download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
Bottom line is, your computer may have been affected months ago or just a day ago--- the best thing you can do is NOT open email attachments from people you do NOT know. That only can help spread virus/worms such as this....
