Brewers fans will be very saddened this morning to hear that CC has apparently (according to the NY Post) signed with the NY Yankees. While I initially heard it was a 6 year $140 million deal, I am now hearing it's 7 years $160 million! WOW... aren't we in an economic downturn?
The Yankees are supposedly interested in chatting with Ben Sheets and his agent too... the Brewers starting pitching staff will be a lot different next year that's for sure.
Speaking of the economic downturn, the NFL has laid off 150 employees in the past week, yet player's salaries continue to climb astronomically! At what point can players continue to make more $$$ while many of us are making less $$$ every year and then the sports franchises expect and demand that the spectators pay more. While I do not have a family, I think back to when I was growing up in school and I know that dropping $100 for 4 for a Brewers game or $400 for 4 for a Packers game wouldn't have been possible. Tickets are expensive, concessions are expensive... at what point will it ever stop/end? As long as season ticket holders fork over the big $$$ to get those Packers/Brewers tickets, there will continue to be increases in ticket prices year after year... and for what? To pay these massive player's salaries, among other things.
Am I telling people to stop buying season tickets or any tickets in general to go to these games? NO... absolutely not. I'm just merely stating that this nasty cycle of games becoming less and less affordable is caused by those of us who continue to support this backwards way of economics. It's a never-ending cycle. Many people (if they get raises year to year) usually get 2% to 4% over the previous year's salary... professional ticket prices have increased up to 10% in some areas!
As I type this, I still look forward to the next Packers or Brewers game I will go to ... I just can't grasp the concept of high ticket prices and $160 million contracts.. Let's assume CC starts 32 games next year (160 divided by 5 days rest) and pitches 32 games for 7 years (224 games)... that pays him just over $714,000 each game he pitches! I don't know if I'll ever make that much money in my lifetime... much less one game!
I'd love to hear your take on all this....
