I've been getting asked this question a lot lately... how much we're expecting for tonight through Tuesday. (Dec 8 and 9) I had to pull my "snow forecasting bible" out last night for the first time this year. It's a folder of 8 different snow forecasting techniques that forecasters use... as you can imagine, kind of "nerdy".
Most of the snow will fall from tonight through the morning hours Tuesday, but there still could be an additional inch or two from 7am Tuesday to 10am Tuesday. The heaviest amounts will be in the southern parts of Wood, Portage and Waushara counties down into Juneau and Adams counties.
There are a lot of factors with the forecasting of this major storm system. The one that will make or break this forecast is, how far north will the warm front make it tonight/early Tuesday. It looks like it will get close enough to Juneau, Adams and Waushara counties that there may be some freezing rain at times later tonight and into the overnight period. Then, those areas will see some heavy snow on top of that. As you can imagine, we're expecting quite a few school closings/delays for tomorrow. Okay, here's what I'm expecting to fall tonight through Tuesday morning:
Rhinelander- 3" <2.5" received>
Phillips- 3.5" <2.2" received>
Antigo- 4.5" <2.8" received>
Wausau- 5" <3.5" received>
Stevens Point- 7" <5.5" received>
Wisconsin Rapids- 8" <4.3" received>
Adams-Friendship- 10" <8.5" received>
Most of the snow will be done accumulating around 7am Tuesday morning... but I can't rule out another inch for the rest of the morning for some locales.
Regardless of how much that falls, please be careful if you do have to travel. Right now, I would not recommend being out on the roads after 8pm this evening through 8am tomorrow morning. In addition, please give your snow plow drivers a break: don't tailgate and allow them some extra room!
I'll post the totals tomorrow when I get them. Be safe y'all!
