Time to become "unpopular"

I've held off on my Favre comments... up until now.

As a football player for a majority of my life... all the way through my last years at college... I have a different take on this.  Honestly, it seems like fans are split 50/50 on this... last year, in the Spring (2007), seemed like 80% of the fans wanted him back...... this year... maybe 50% at best.  Worse yet, lots of verbal opposition, never heard that last year.

My first love is my beloved Steelers... our Web Dude extraordinaire (Bill Martens) shares the same passion, we love the Steelers and we love the Pack.  I have been in Wisconsin 10 years.. the Pack is my "more than second" team... they are my 2nd love... and I can NOT stand where this is all going with the upcoming Favre decision.

First... playing a sport for a job.. AWESOME.  I admire all athletes that can do that professionally ....  and that goes for any sport.

My take.. let him come back!   Rodgers is under contract for 2 more years... '08 and '09.  Do the Pack know what they have with him?   NO!   Does it matter... NO!  If Rodgers doesn't play this year... his value and probable extension are not gonna cost much.....  why have 50% of the people turned against him?  In addition, the Packers drafted a pretty good QB in Brian Brohm this year in case Rodgers is not the future.

The Packers have the upper hand here.... and I have a feeling Favre's not gonna play next year cuz of all the stuff that's involved and that the Packers are probably asking too much for a trade.  One thing that may help Favre is that Commissioner Goodell has been involved in all this lately.  Rumors are of a trade to Tampa Bay.... what happens if he is traded to another team and then that team then trades him to Minnesota?

Then there's of course more drama lately that sours me a bit of Favre... the reported use of his Packers cell phone to talk to a few coaches in Minnesota... that has made me re-think writing this blog... however, I will give MVP QB the benefit of the doubt on this until I find out more.

Bottom line... go Packers for 2008... my Steelers will meet you in the Super Bowl next year!

Posted by: Anonymous Chad, I don't care, but i just find it humorous and unbelieveable that so many people feel so strongly about someone who could care less about Wisconsin fans or the Green Bay Organization . Whether Rodgers is a success or not, the right thing is being done and Favre will never play for the Pack again. With or without Favre, I still hope Green Bay loses every game !

It's looking more and more like Favre's gone. What happens with Rodgers should he struggle this year? He has 2 years left on his rookie deal and if he struggles this year, he's on the last year of his rookie deal. Then, do they get him cheaply for an extension, or to they let him do his last year and hope Brian Brohm can step it up? Will be interesting.... that's for sure.

I was just reading up on your responses to your blog in the past week and you seem like you have struck a chord. I am mixed on it. As a life-long Packers fan, I am sad that #4 isn't gonna be there this year. However, I think that #4 still gives the Packers the best chance to win. For someone to come out and say that Rodgers is the best bet and not a Packers fan or watcher, what do they know? What do any of us know? I will miss Brett and will constantly wish him the best for the rest of his career, should he ever play again.

I wasn't necessarily trying to strike a chord... just wondering what changed from last year to this year about how people feel. I wish Rodgers luck, but I just have a feeling the first game he struggles, the fans will turn on him. It's an awkward situation at best.

Posted by: Anonymous Chad, I haven't demanded anything ! Just commended and agreed with the Packers for handling this situation professionally. Did you notice the standing ovation at the share holders meeting for both Thompson and McCarthy? You need to quit reacting with your heart and use common sense. Nothing is a given, Rodgers might not work out, but it is the time to take the chance. By the way, I am not a Packer fan, I feel I can look at this a little more objectively than you. Time will tell, have a nice day. P.S. Favre-- Sportsman of the Year, That's a joke !!!

If you're not a Packer fan, why do you care?

Posted by: Anonymous Chad, You really don't know who gives the Packers a better chance for success , now do you ! In the last 10 years Favre has a passer rating of 77.8 and has 18 interceptions in his last 9 playoff games. I think you need to stick to weather and forget trying to run the Packers. Thompson is in charge of the team for a reason and seems to be doing quite well since he arrived.

And of all those years, look at what he has accomplished without a whole lotta pieces around him. I think it's funny that just 2 years ago, people cried to get him back. Even this past spring, people begged and cried for him to come back. Now, he wants to come back and no one wants him. What has Aaron Rodgers ever done... besides getting hurt playing in relief? Both sides have played this one wrong, the Packers for forcing a decision at beginning of February, and Favre for giving them a decision when he wasn't ready. Bottom line, it won't matter. Favre won't play for the Packers again. If you think I should stop trying to run the Packers.... what are you doing by demanding Rodgers play? You're offering an opinion, and that's all I'm offering too.

Posted by: Anonymous Favre was an MVP along time ago! He does not play at that level anymore in the big games. He Is going to be 39 years old and will hit a non-productive wall late in the season just like did last year. His late season and playoff record the past 10 years is horrible ! Get over it Packer fans and move on !! Unreal!!!!

Brett finished 6th in the league in passer rating, and only one spot less than the NFC leader, Tony Romo. My whole point is, who gives the Packers a better chance to win this year? Rodgers or Favre? All my years of football tell me that it is Favre...

would have to agree with u chad let him come back since they dont want to trade him then let'em play. people said let rodgers do it since hes been sitin for 3 yrs on the bench...heard about the cell phone thin too...not good if its true or not. we'll have to c. until then..we'll have to c what goes on. GO STEELERS! BTW what ever happened to kordell? was my fav QB!

I think that Rodgers will be a decent QB... but how to you move past an MVP named Brett Favre when he wants to play? Kordell was on Pros vs. Joes a season ago on a different network... never really got a fair shake IMO.
