Was it Wet this Summer? You Betcha!

Updated: Tue 11:25 AM, Aug 31, 2010

We have had a plethora of questions concerning rainfall and this summer. Now, compared to last year (relatively dry and very cool), rainfall once a week would have been considered a wet summer! In fact, if it wasn't for August 2009 getting over 6" of rain for the month, the summer would have been about half of what a normal summer is for rainfall. (Avg. summer rainfall is just about 13" in Wausau- there was just under 4" of rain in June/July 2009 with over 6" arriving August 2009.)

This summer, our rainfall from June - August (through 8/30) has been: 6.51", 8.24" and 3.17" respectively. That is just about 18" in the summer, where are average is around 13".

The National Weather Service has a nice little write up on what has happened this summer:

www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php

Through 8/30/2010: Wausau had received 17.92", which puts it at the sixth wettest summer on record. Rain continues to fall for Tuesday, so there still may be a chance to move up.

Other areas: (again through 8/30/2010 ONLY)

Marshfield: *** New Record ***, Wettest summer on record. Total: 22.15" (previous record: 20.30" in 1935)

Laona: *** New Record ***, Wettest summer on record. Total: 18.31" (previous record: 17.76" in 1999)

Other Stats from around our area:

Minocqua: Second wettest summer on record. Total: 22.07" (record: 23.46" in 1978)

Clintonville: Third wettest summer on record:  Total: 18.99" (record 22.42" in 1993)

Shawano: Third wettest summer on record: Total: 16.85" (record 18.68" in 1940)

St. Germain: Third wettest summer on record: Total: 17.41" (record 17.89 in 1978)

Stevens Point: Third wettest summer  on record: Total: 18.59" (record 20.99" in 1914)

Wisconsin Rapids: Third wettest summer on record: Total: 18.55" (record 20.99" in 1924)

Waupaca: Fifth wettest summer on record: Total: 18.54" (record 28.03" in 1939)

Phelps: Eigth wettest summer on record: Total: 16.39" (record 22.97" in 1966)

Rhinelander: Sixteenth wettest summer on record: Total: 15.65" (record 21.33" in 1914)

With the abundance of rainfall this year (esp. compared to years past), it hopefully will allow for a great end of the crop season/harvest and will have gotten some moisture back into the soil and aquifers for the upcoming Winter season. The one thing it has done for sure, is made for a wild and crazy mosquito season! I almost got carried off by them this weekend while visiting Mommica Stern's Place on Fence Lake... and that was with skeeter spray put on every 8 to 10 hours! Yikes!
