It's a sad day. I can't believe Chicago lost the bid for the 2016 Olympics. I have to say I was very excited to see the games come to the Windy City for several reasons.
First of all living in the Badger State and being a journalist... many of us here at NewsChannel 7 would have been able to cover a lot of the events from a first hand perspective... instead of just taking new feeds from other reporters who are getting the chance to be there at the events "Live." There was a lot of talk that some of the events would actually take place here in Wisconsin. Also the games would have been close enough to actually go a watch as a spectator. Obviously growing up as a cheerleader and a dancer, I love watching gymnastics. It's probably my favorite competition in the Summer Games. I remember watching gymnasts like Shannon Miller and Dominique Dawes and wanting to grow up to be just like them. I would do my tumbling passes through my family's living room... or my mock beam routines on my make-shift balance beam in my back yard. Most people dream about bringing home a gold medal... but for all of us average people that will continue to remain just a dream. : ( For anyone who's never tried to become a gymnast (I have, but was never a good one... I was never any good at the apparatuses... tumbling was my only strong point) the sport takes grace, strength, skill, and a lot of determination. Another reason I'm really disappointed is the fact that many of the events would also have spilled over into my home state of Indiana. There was also talk that some of the event would have been held in some of the towns and cities close to my hometown.
I guess though why I'm also upset is that I looked at it as a once in a lifetime experience for me as both a journalist and regular old Joe who just loves sports to cash in on the memories made when the Olympics come to a city so close to where I am currently living. I guess I'll have to just keep dreaming that someday... the Olympics will come to my FAVORITE city in the U.S.... Chicago.
What are your thoughts? Were you as hopeful as I to actually attend the Summer Games as a spectator in person and not just watching it from the comfort of your own home?
