2009 Langlade County Youth Fair - With a Funny Twist

The Langlade County Youth Fair is now in the record books for 2009... and although I only made it there for their opening day... things were off to a great start.

My videographer John and I had the opportunity to be a part of the judging process. We saw hundreds of beautiful projects that these 4-Her and FFA members have been working on all year long. For one of our stories we even interviewed the judge to find out what he was looking for in a completed project. Thank you to the Oneida County Youth Educator, Jim Winkler, who took time out of his busy day of judging to help the viewers at home know what the 4-H program is all about. And thank you to one special exhibitor, Jarod, who let us be a part of his judging.

Also a special thank you to one of the Langlade County Youth Fair Coordinators, Rhonda Clements, for showing us around and explaining all of this years attractions.

And of course a fair would not be a fair (for me anyway) without a trip through the livestock barns. : ) John and I spent some time in the hog barn with a few 4-Hers who were busy getting ready for the Hog Show that Wednesday night.

And I have to share a funny story with you all. For those of you who know me, I'm a pretty tall girl - so climbing over gates are usually not a problem for me. So when I asked Matt Bowman if I could ask him a few questions about his pig he was so excited that he quickly jumped the gate. And of course, I asked him if it was all right for me to come into his pen with him... and he said sure, but you'll have to climb over. So not thinking twice I swing my leg to get over thinking I'll just be able to straddle it and swing my other leg over -HOWEVER - I under estimated how tall the gate was. So as you can imagine... I was stuck! Of course there had to be a crowd surrounding us wanting to see what Channel 7 was up to and her I am left trying to figure out how to get off of this gate. But I finally made it! Matt was such a bundle of energy when I was talking with him. He had so much enthusiasm about the pig project that he reminded me a lot of me. During the interview I asked him about his pig Abby and how often he works with her. He explained to me that he has to feed and water her everyday, but went on to tell me how many farms have automatic waterers and feeders. So he walked over to the automatic waterer to show me how it worked and sprayed me with some cold water. It was so funny! That moment brought back a flood of memories of my time spent on the farm and in the 4-H program. So thank you Matt for introducing me to your pig Abby and making my day at the Langlade Co. Youth Fair so memorable.

I'd also like to say a special thank you to 4-Her, Scamus Roff and to one of the member of the Langlade Co. Youth Market Animal Sale, Todd Lucht.

Congratulations to all of this year's exhibitors! And be sure to thank all of the volunteers that keep the 4-H program alive and running. For without these volunteers, the tradition would not be what it is today. And 4-Hers and FFA members, please don't forget to thank your parents for everything they do too!

**A special thank you to my videographer - John!  We have now dubbed ourselves the "Ultimate Fair Team!"  Thanks for all you do!!

**PICTURES TO COME... BE SURE TO CHECK BACK!  : )
