Cow Appreciation Day

For those of you who watch NewsChannel 7 regularly, you know I have a love for animals - especially farm animals.  My original plans were to go to college and become a large animal veterinarian; but instead, I majored in Agricultural Communications and minored in Animal Sciences (at Purdue University - Go Boilers!).  I'm a proud 10-year 4-H member of Starke County, Indiana.  During my 4-H career I showed beef cattle, hogs, and sheep (but sheep just during my last year thanks to my grandparents).  My family raises Simmental and Crossbred beef cattle.  And one thing I miss more than anything living here in Wisconsin is not being able to go out to the barn on a regular basis.  So... since I can't be with my babies during Cow Appreciation Day in July.... I would like to see some of your favorite bovines.  I'll even feature some of them on the air during NewsChannel 7 at Noon.

To submit your favorite photos just click the link below.  Along with the picture please send your name, where you are from, and of course if the animal has a name send it too.  Don't be afraid to get creative, and if you even want to hop in the picture go for it!  Young or old, black or red, bull or cow - it doesn't matter to me!  : )   I'm looking forward to seeing them!

Doodles, Submitted by Lindsey, from her family's farm near Milan.

She says Jerseys are her favorite breed.

Buttercup, Submitted by Elizabeth, small dairy farm in Wood County.

Elizabeth is a proud member of the Wood County 4-H program.

WIND-D-ACRES SNOWBALL-P-ET, Submitted by Joel.

He says what makes Snowball very unique is that he is a polled registered Holstein bull and currently ranks among the elite polled bulls in the United States.  Polled is a rather uncommon trait in Holsteins and 50 percent of Snowball's offspring will be polled (hornless), which will reduce the need for the dreaded task of dehorning.

Snowball is sired by Shottle and was bred by Knoeck Bros., Inc. of Marathon, WI.

Joel says: Polled Holsteins have been called "The Breed of the Future" by some.
