Christmas is five weeks away, that's five weeks to get items on your shopping list crossed off.

If you're shopping for kids, you'll likely be spending lots of time in the toy aisle. But before you make your purchases, consumer advocates are warning you about dangerous toys.

Toy safety has come a long way, toys are now safer than ever before, but parents still need to look out for common hazards.

The Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group or WISPIRG was at Wausau Aspirus Hospital Tuesday with their Trouble in Toyland report and list of dangerous toys.

This year they're focusing on choking hazards, high-powered magnets, loud toys and chemicals in toys.

"Just be cautious, when you're out there think about potential hazards when purchasing a toy especially with really young children under the age of 3," said Cordell Cox, a WISPIRG consumer associate.

Most toys have disclosures on the label, but that doesn't mean your child can't choke on them.

Cox says any toy that is small enough to fit inside a toilet paper roll is too small for a toddler.

Plus, hundreds of children are taken to the emergency room each year after swallowing high-powered magnets.

Choking is the most common cause of toy-related deaths.

Tiny batteries found in watches and other items are also extremely dangerous when ingested, and can cause damage a child's esophagus.

86,500 toys have been recalled in the last year.
