Getting to church on time isn't always easy, especially when you're driving a tractor.

North New Hope Lutheran Church was transformed Sunday morning.

The congregation moved from inside pews to hay bales on the outside lawn for the 4th annual Drive Your Tractor to Church event.

"We have about 100 hay bales that people sit on. Our alter is a thousand pound hay bale," said Mark Ellingson, New Hope's president.

Along with bluegrass infused music and a bib overall clad pastor, this special service was especially farmer-friendly.

But the tractors really took the spotlight.

"Anytime you can get one of these old tractors running it is a pretty special event, plus then we're able to as a local community outreach to all of our neighbors," he said.

Whether you drive a John Deere, International Harvester, or Minneapolis Moline, this event provides the perfect opportunity to show it off.

"This tractor is a 1937 John Deere... a small two plow tractor that has been in Portage County since it was made," said Bob Ellingson, who's owned it since 1941.

Tractors on display were old and new, green and red, but one white model really stood out.

"It's a 1950 Farmall C that was produced as a demonstrator.. they did these as a sales promotion in the middle of the century and called it the mid-century program," said Kerry McCarron, of Plainfield.

In all, about 50 tractors lined the church parking lot, and hundreds of churchgoers filled the yard.

Money raised from the pig roast, pies and raffles will help fund local 4H and FFA groups, the Farmers Union and the Portage County Breakfast on the Farm.

The event was a joint effort between North New Hope Lutheran and Faith Lutheran Church in Rosholt.
