951st 'Sapper' Company Returning Home Saturday
Diana Normand
The Rhinelander and Tomahawk communities are ready to welcome home the 951st Sapper Company.
The group of national guardsmen is coming tomorrow after spending nearly one year in Afghanistan.
The Sappers, which are combat engineers, had the mission of seeking and destroying improvised explosive devices along roadsides.
"As somebody whose been down this road of seeing combat action I am delighted that the rest of the troops are coming home," says Joe Story, Commander of the Wisconsin 11th District of the American Legion.
The veteran says he knows three of the men in the Unit and is excited to see them again.
The Sappers will fly into the Central Wisconsin Airport tomorrow morning and then be led through Tomahawk and eventually Rhinelander.
There will be a ceremony at 3:30 at the Rhinelander High School where leaders, family, and friends will welcome them home.
