Doctor: Pregnant Women Susceptible To More Complications From H1N1 Flu Virus
Margo Spann
The CDC recommends all pregnant women protect themselves from the H1N1 virus to avoid a trip to the pharmacy.
Some Health Experts say the virus is particularly dangerous for pregnant women.
A local doctor says pregnancy can weaken a woman's immune system, putting them at a higher risk of getting sick.
He's treated about 10 pregnant patients with H1N1 and says it can have far worse complications than the season flu.
"As of August 21st of this year, we've had 28 fatalities nationwide from H1N1, that number is very small of all the pregnancy patients in this country but it's a far higher rate of death than from normal seasonal flu," says Dr. Paul Kerns, OB/GYN for Aspirus Weston Clinic.
If you choose to get vaccinated, the doctor says there is no research to suggest it will affect your un-born child.
