Meat Processors Remind Hunters Warm Weekend Temps Not The Best For Preserving Meat

Margo Spann

This weekend's weather for the gun-deer season opener could be comfortable for hunters but may not be the greatest for preserving their prize. Meat processors are reminding hunters to keep their kill cold or they could lose their meat. "If they leave it lay 6 hours or so if it's warm outside which it may be this weekend, Just take care of it as soon as possible. As soon as you get out of the woods don't leave it laying around," says Steven Roeder with Zillman's Meat Market in Wausau. He suggests using ice packs, or cutting the meat into quarters and storing it in a cooler until you can get it to a butcher. The most popular cuts of meat are steaks, and chops. The rest is usually made into sausage or burgers. He says this time of year they process about 700 deer.
