MARSHFIELD, Wis. (AP) -- The family of the lone survivor of a shooting rampage in Crandon says he's devastated that he lost so many of his close friends and saddened that he won't be able to attend their funerals.
Charlie Neitzel's family issued a statement today at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield where he's undergoing a third surgery Thursday.
The family says Neitzel will be hospitalized indefinitely while recovering from three bullet wounds.
Neitzel was wounded and six of his friends were fatally shot at a Crandon home after Tyler Peterson forced his way in and opened fire.
Peterson died later of gunshots that authorities say were likely self-inflicted.
Aunt Linda Enright says it's simply too early to know the full effect of her nephew's injuries.
Neitzel was shot once in the right leg, once in the right upper arm and once in the shoulder.
Authorities the only reason he survived was because he played dead when Peterson stormed into his ex-girlfriend's house and opened fire.
Enright says Neitzel can't talk about the case to reporters because it's still under investigation.
Neitzel's mother, father and other relatives sat to the side while Enright spoke.
