CRANDON, Wis. (AP) -- More details of the weekend's killing rampage in Crandon have emerged just as children prepared to return to classes today in a city shaken by a crime that left seven dead.
Off-duty Deputy Tyler Peterson's ex-girlfriend was among six killed when he burst into a pizza party at her home and opened fire with an AR-15 assault rifle.
A seventh victim was wounded but survived.
Hours later, officers closed in on Peterson near a friend's home and he was shot in the arm from long range.
Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says Peterson shot himself three times in the head, and the final shot killed him.
All six victims attended or had recently graduated from Crandon High School, which was closed for two days but is resuming classes today.
In Rhinelander, about 40 people held candles, prayed and sang "Amazing Grace" last evening at the first of three vigils being held over three days by the Tri-County Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.
The council's executive director Shellie Holmes says the vigils are to honor the victims and to name the crime what it was - domestic violence.
