CRANDON, Wis. (AP) -- The condition of Crandon shooting survivor Charlie Neitzel has been upgraded to fair.

Officials at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield say the 21-year-old Pickerel man had surgery today to remove debris from his wounds.

(Story continues below)

He initially had been reported in critical condition with wounds suffered in the shooting rampage that left six of his friends dead.

They were having a pizza party during Crandon High School's homecoming weekend when it happened early Sunday.

Authorities say an off-duty sheriff's deputy who was trying to patch up things with a former girlfriend got in an argument with her, left and came back with an assault rifle and started shooting.
